THE EDO LITURGICO-CULTURAL GROUP CELEBRATES IN GRAND STYLE
Sunday, May 27, 2018

The veracity of the claim that the Benin culture is richly endowed is made manifest in the patrimony of the Benin people – their history, their beliefs, their artefacts, etc. This truth, which continues to be appreciated by the indigenes of the Benin land as well as by admirers from other cultures, found expression during the Edo Liturgico-Cultural Week celebration, held in the Seminary of Ss. Peter and Paul, Bodija, from the 20th – 27th May, 2018. The Liturgico-Cultural Week celebration is the Seminary’s peculiar way of celebrating and appreciating the cultural heritage of the Nigerian people – a practice which has generally assumed the status of a ‘tradition’. The 6th edition of the celebration tagged: Ugie-Edo 2018: Expressing our Christian Faith in Culture was replete with various activities ranging from the spiritual, intellectual, and social spheres. In honour of the celebration, a football match was organized between the seminarians of the Yoruba Liturgico-Cultural team and those of the Edo Liturgico-Cultural team, on the 24th of May, 2018, which ended 2-1 in favour of the Edo Liturgico-Cultural team. Furthermore, the beauty of the history and practices of the Benin people was appreciated and diligently exposed to the seminary community on the 25th of May, 2018 during a talk session. The paper titled: Ancestral Veneration and Veneration of Saints: Any Meeting Point, was delivered by Rev. Fr. Jude Ayemwenre, and ably moderated by Rev. Aisosa Osawe Anthony; both of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin City. The Grand Finale of the celebration which began with the Solemn Vespers on the evening of Saturday (Evening Prayer 1) culminated on Sunday with a two-fold celebration. The first part was the celebration of the Holy Mass, presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City; Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Akubeze, ably represented by Rev. Fr. Paschal Omono; the Vocations Director of the Archbishop of Benin City. The Eucharistic Sacrifice, which had Rev. Fr. Bodricks Benjamin as the homilist, was replete with personalities of different calibres, alongside a choir group from the Archbishop of Benin City. The other half of the celebration was at the Seminary auditorium where various cultural displays, songs, drama, etc, were rendered to further make manifest the treasures of the Benin Culture. This session also had a mini-launching facilitated by Major Gen. Charles Omorege, Rtd., in a bid to support the affairs of the Edo Liturgico-Cultural Group. The Benin Week celebration for the 2017/2018 academic/formation session was indeed a great success, and the tale of it will linger on.
