Department of Philosophy
Departmental Regulations

General Course Requirements

  1. Compulsory: A course specified by the department, which a student must take and pass
  2. Required: A course specified by the department, which a student must take but not necessarily pass.
  3. Elective: A course specified by the department, which a student can take in other to make up the required additional units for the award of the degree.

The following courses are available in the department

 

Year 1 (100 Level)

  1. General Studies

SS/GES/101, SS/GES/102, SS/GES/103, SS/GES/104, SS/GES/105. (10 Units)

Candidates must obtain 12 units from subject areas other than philosophy and which may include the social sciences and African studies and a minimum of 8 units GES courses.

 

Year 2 (200 Level)

Candidates must obtain minimum of 15 units from subject areas other than philosophy, like social sciences, religion studies and education.

 

FOUR-YEAR DEGREE PROGRAMME:

Single Honours

For the award of Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy candidates must satisfy the regulations for the B.A. Degree as specified by the Faculty of Arts of the University of Ibadan. Candidates must also satisfy the following Departmental requirements.

 

100 LEVEL COURSES

  1. Compulsory

SS/PHL/101 SS/PHL/103 (6 Units)

5 units of GES courses, that is, SS/GES/101 GES 102

  1. Required

SS/PHL/105 (3 Units)

  1. Elective

Candidates must obtain 3 units from the following:

SS/SOC/101 SS/AFR/101

Candidates must obtain 6 units from the Faculty of the Social Sciences.

Candidates must obtain 6 units from other subject areas in the Faculty of Arts.

 

200 LEVEL COURSE

  1. Compulsory

SS/PHL/202 SS/PHL/210 (6 Units)

5 units of GES courses, that is, SS/GES/104 SS/GES/202

  1. Required

SS/PHL/203 SS/PHL/205 SS/PHL/208 (9 Units)

  1. Elective

Candidates must obtain 6 units from the following:

SS/PHL/206 SS/PHL/207 SS/PHL/209

Candidates must obtain 3 units from the Faculty of the Social Sciences.

Candidates must obtain 3 units from other subject areas in the Faculty of Arts.

 

300 – 400 LEVEL COURSES

4 units of GES courses, that is, GES 103 GES 203

Candidates must obtain 18 units from the following courses:

SS/PHL/305, SS/PHL/308, SS/PHL/309, SS/PHL/310, SS/PHL/311, SS/PHL/317, SS/PHL/403, SS/PHL/407, SS/PHL/408, SS/PHL/409, SS/PHL/410, SS/PHL/411

Candidates must obtain 6 units from the Faculty of the Social Sciences.

Candidates must obtain 6 units from other subject areas in the Faculty of Arts.

 

 

Total number of units required for graduation (4 Year Degree Programme) 120 units

Total number of units required for graduation (Direct Entry -3 Years Programme) 100 units

 

 

GRADING

The total number of units taken along with grades obtained in each course are recorded for the purposes of computing the Cumulative Grade Point Average (C.G.P.A) of the class of degree. Hitherto, the points, approximating percentage scores are as follows:

The CGPA range for classification of degrees under the 7-Point arrangement is as indicated below:

First Class Honours

4.6 to 5.9

Second Class Honours (Upper Division)

Second Class Honours (Lower Division)

1.6 to 2.5

Third Class Honours

1.0 to 1.5

Pass

However, with effect from 2016/2017 academic session, the Seminary will adopt the 4-Point Grading System as directed by the University of Ibadan, in line with the recommendation of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and in other to align with other universities worldwide. Under the new arrangement, the points, approximating percentage scores would be as stated below:

Fail

No student with a CGPA less than 1.00 shall be awarded a degree.

 

The Grade Point Average (GPA) for each semester is obtained by dividing the total points by the total number of semester credit hours. For the purpose of computing the class of degree, all courses taken by the students, the total number of units and grades obtained shall be compiled and used in computing the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

 

In cases where courses have been repeated, the grade and units will be used twice in calculating the GPA.
