LITURGICAL CELEBRATION FOR THE CONSECRATION OF RUSSIA AND UKRAINE
Friday, March 25, 2022

In line with Pope Francis’ call for prayers for God’s intervention in the worsening situation in Ukraine, the Seminary community gathered for a liturgical service on Friday, 25th March, 2022. Recall that on 15th March, 2022, the Holy See had announced that the Holy Father would consecrate Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the Solemnity of the Annunciation, 25th March, 2022, at St Peter Basilica in Rome.

The liturgical celebration, which was presided over by Rev. Fr. Francis Adedara, was a moment of intense prayers and intent listening to the Word of God. While preaching the homily, Fr. Adedara noted that the war in Ukraine is symptomatic of the turbulence in the heart of humans. He further explained that the timing of the prayers of consecration was apt as the Solemnity of Annunciation affords us the opportunity to appreciate the Prince of Peace, who has come to dwell among us and restore peace to the world. It is equally a moment of atonement, since Fridays in the season of Lent are days that are traditionally committed to seeking God’s forgiveness. The highpoint of the celebration was the Prayer of Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which was prayed meditatively by all present, in union with the Universal Church.
