As part of the formative activities for the year, the Seminary authorities organized guidance and counselling session for all seminarians. The facilitator of the event, Fr. Roland Onvekwusi began by stating that there is indeed a distinction between guidance and counselling and spiritual direction in the Seminary community. Counselling in the Seminary serves as a handmaid of spiritual direction.

Highlighting the importance of Guidance and Counselling to formation and indeed to pastoral ministry, Fr. Roland explained that counselling is built on relations and it ensures balance in human development and would help the Seminarian develop his pastoral sensitivity. According to him, counselling is not for the mentally or psychologically sick and it does not mean one is lacking in spirituality. The goal of counselling is to ensure ‘Deeper self awareness.’

Fr. Roland concluded by reminding everyone that the Guidance and Counselling sessions are marked by a seal of confidentiality and so enjoined everyone present to use the opportunity of the newly established seminary counselling unit.
