ANIOMA AND IGBO LITURGICO-CULTURAL WEEK CELEBRATION
Sunday, May 22, 2022

Cultural diversity is one of the marks of the Seminary of Saints Peter and Paul, Bodija, Ibadan. This is one of the many aspects that are highly appreciated and celebrated by the entire Seminary community. In line with this, the Anioma and Igbo Liturgico-Cultural group celebrated the cultural heritage of the Anioma and Igbo people from 16th to 22nd of May, 2022. The week-long celebration included activities such as a football competition between the Anioma and Igbo liturgico-cultural group of the Seminary and that of the Dominican Institute, Ogene dance night and a lecture on the topic, “The Portrait of God in the Interplay between Anioma and Igbo Culture and Christianity”. The Speaker, Rev. Fr. Henry Ogonwa, asserted that the concept of God has always been present in the Igbo culture. However, the interplay does not presuppose that the Christian religious conception of God is an adaptation of the Anioma and Igbo understanding. Nonetheless, Christians must utilize the good elements found in the Anioma and Igbo culture, in the transmission of the Gospel message. The highlight of the week-long celebration was the thanksgiving Mass, which was presided over by the Rector, Fr. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, and the cultural extravaganza. The rector remarked that culture and religion are inseparable, since they complement each other. He recommended a healthy harmony of culture and religion that is pivotal to the wellbeing of the Church. The extravaganza featured thrilling performances, by both the hosts and the invited cultural groups. It was indeed a splendid celebration of culture.
